Happy Christmas from Life On Cars

AS a special Christmas treat for everyone who enjoys Life On Cars and its coverage of motoring news, reviews and events I'm happy to share this, a magazine looking back at some of the automotive highlights of 2012.

Not only is it the moment when I finally get to announce what my favourite car of 2012 is but it's also a chance to look back at some of the best bits of a cracking year for car enthusiasts, and I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I've agonised over which events and cars deserve a second look in the 20 pages of this rather special edition of the magazine.

If you're bored of your presents already or you've had a little too much wine and turkey, then sit back and enjoy this Car of the Year edition of the Life On Cars Magazine.

Merry Christmas!

Get ready for Christmas with our Car of the Year magazine

IT'S nearly that time of year again. Yep, the bit when a special festive edition of the Life On Cars magazine arrives.

As usual, it's a bit of a rundown of some of the best bits of 2012, including the not-at-all-prestigious announcement of what the best car Life On Cars has driven over the past few months is.

There have been dozens of great new cars this year, but to be in with a chance of being named Car of The Year it'll have to be at least as good as the current Ford Fiesta, the Honda CR-Z and the Citroen DS3 Racing (the winners in 2009, 2010 and 2011 respectively). Even though I can only show you the cover at the moment, so far the signs are looking very good.

You can also catch up on all the old magazines - including the 2010 and 2011 Christmas specials and the current edition - by visiting the Magazines section of this blog.

The new edition will be in ready in time for Christmas...

2012 Ormskirk MotorFest - Read the official magazine here!

IF YOU'RE looking forward to this year's Ormskirk MotorFest then has Life On Cars got a treat for you!

For the second year running I've been given the green light to team up with Aintree Circuit Club, the event's organisers, and produce the only magazine which has their official backing, and it's packed full of news, features and information all about the motorsport-themed event on August 26.

More than twice as long as previous Life On Cars magazines, it's a delve behind the scenes of the full throttle event taking place in Ormskirk on the Bank Holiday Sunday which I hope you'll enjoy reading as much as I've enjoyed creating.

See you there...

P.S: If you missed the chance to read the official magazine on last year's show you can check it out here.

Life On Cars: The Champion motoring roadtest directory

THOSE of you who have been following Life On Cars for the past few years will probably have worked out it's about motoring by now.

Driving cars - and more importantly, writing about them - is what this blog's always been about, and it's always heartening to see from the number of hits that people do read it and enjoy it. Which is why, in a tradition started way back in 2010, I've always liked to give something back by creating special, online-only magazines packed with features, reviews and test drives.

This isn't one of them.

There will be no tenth issue of the imaginatively-titled Life On Cars magazine but what I've got instead is something I use to show the car makers, the PR people and the SMMT that all my test drives do actually make it into print - what I call the Champion motoring roadtest directory.

Readers familiar with the motoring pages of The Champion will be familiar with its pages but for those of you who don't live in Sefton and West Lancashire - which I know is a lot of you - it's possibly the first time you'll get to see a range of test drives and Life On Cars pieces as they've appeared in print. Covering everything from the Alfa Giulietta to the Volkswagen Polo GTI, it's an exhaustive look at almost all the cars I've driven over the past year.

Of course, Life On Cars is about more than just test drives and there's all sorts of stories and reviews on the way, including I hope, for the first time ever, coverage of the simply colossal Cholmondeley Pageant of Power later this month. If it's got horsepower and at least three wheels involved, it ticks all the right boxes in my book!

Until then however, feel free to see how a whole raft of cars fared when they got The Champion roadtest treatment...

Life On Cars Magazine Issue Nine!

THE LATEST edition of the Life On Cars magazine is ready!

As ever it's packed with motoring features and news aplenty - including a round up of some of the stars of this year's Geneva Motorshow - and a look at two very different British sports cars.

Hope you enjoy it...

A new magazine on the way

EAGLE-eyed readers will have already seen that work is underway on a new issue of the web magazine.

It's been a while - last Christmas, in fact - since the last issue came out, but with the weather getting a bit warmer and all sorts of interesting cars coming out of hibernation it's probably the right time to look into some great motoring stories in a bit more depth, not least the mad Morgan Threewheeler I got a taste of couple of weeks ago.

Merry Christmas from Life On Cars

AS a special festive treat for both our readers a Christmas edition of the Life On Cars magazine to choose the car of the year is finally ready!

This bumper 20-page edition not only looks back at some of the best new cars, but memorable events, roads and shows from across the north west and further afield. Car and bike nuts are already looking forward to a great 2012, and Life On Cars is looking forward to reflecting that, but if you just can't wait until then put your Christmas turkey down and take a look back at some of the motoring highlights of 2011.

Sit back and enjoy the read...

A Christmas gift for all you readers

CHANCES are if you're a car fan you'll like this a bit more than Mistletoe and Wine.

Yes, the not-at-all-prestigious Life On Cars Car of the Year Award is back, and as usual it comes gift-wrapped in a Christmas special edition magazine. With so many great cars launched this year it's been a right old nightmare trying to pick a favourite, but after a lot of agonising I've finally picked a winner which I reckon is just as impressive as Honda's CR-Z was this time last year.

If you liked the effort I came up with last Christmas then you'll be pleased to know all the additional awards - best road, best event, and so on - are all back as well, in what should be an enjoyable read once you've polished off your pigs in blankets and got tired of eating turkey.

The new edition will be ready in time for Christmas. Hope you like it...

Packed with the latest motoring reviews, news and features, it's an edition with winter in mind, and there's plenty behind the snowy cover to keep you entertained as the nights draw in.

Enjoy the read and let us know what you think...

Life On Cars: the next issue

EAGLE-eyed readers might have already spotted that the Ferrari Enzo on this very blog is now a brand new Skoda.

That's because there's a new issue of the Life On Cars Magazine on the way, and this rather wintry cover is all I can offer as a bit of a sneak preview. The finished product should be ready to read in the next couple of days.

Hope you're looking forward to it...

The older editions, including the Ormskirk MotorFest preview edition, can still be read by clicking here.

Life On Cars: The official Ormskirk MotorFest magazine

A FERRARI Enzo owned by none other than rock legend Rod Stewart is one of the many glorious machines taking part in the Ormskirk MotorFest on August 28.

You can find out all about in the latest edition of the Life On Cars Magazine, which is given over entirely to the event and is officially backed by Aintree Circuit Club, the show's organisers.

Enjoy...

Coming soon....

THERE'S another issue of the Life On Cars Magazine on the way, and this time it's something a bit special.

Not only is the sixth issue given over entirely to the Ormskirk Motorfest, taking place on August 28, but it's a publication that's got the official backing of the event's organisers. Life On Cars has been given the behind-the-scenes look at one of the north west's most exciting motoring events, and in this new publication you'll be able to find out all about it.

Regular readers will also spot that the magazine's been given a bit of a revamp, to keep it fresh and full of ideas, which I hope you'll enjoy when it's launched in the next couple of days.

Life On Cars, Issue Five!

WASPS. Hayfever. Hosepipe bans. There are, unfortunately, lots of things about summer you won't like.

But one of the things you can't beat is blasting down a B-road on a warm evening, and there's no better way to do it than in a British sports car. That's why the latest issue of the Life On Cars Magazine, which is finally ready, is a summer special devoted to them.

So enjoy the latest issue, preferably in the sunshine as you would a sports car itself...

Life On Cars, Issue Four!

MUCH LIKE getting an old Nissan Serena to sixty, creating the latest edition of the Life On Cars Magazine seems to have taken an eternity. But it's here at last!

With everything from new car news and reviews to classic car events and features, it's all here, in a jam-packed 16 pages, including:

  • The reason why the best car in the world, weirdly, isn't the most memorable moment in Ford's history

  • The five best cars from this month's Geneva Motorshow

  • A special feature on the glorious Jaguar E-Type and its 50th anniversary

  • The car you need to take with you on a driving tour of the nation's toughest roads

...and much more besides.

Normal Life On Cars service will resume later this week but until then, enjoy the read...

On its way soon...

THE Life On Cars magazine is back!

Regular readers might have been getting a bit bored with seeing adverts for Issue Three of Life On Cars which - despite being dated as a 2011 issue - was a bit of a festive special, celebrating the best cars of last year.

Well almost, with the most I can reveal at the moment of the forthcoming fourth issue being this preview of the front cover. The whole thing will be available to read on here by the end of the month. But with 2011 in full swing and months of warm, petrolhead-friendly weather on the way, it's the right time for the next issue.

If the magazine's anything as good as the gorgeous E-Type cover - which I reckon is my best design effort yet, beating even the jigsaw look of the Car of the Year edition - it should be as much of a cracker to read as it is for me to make it. Fingers crossed!

If you're not familiar with the original three issues, which were published last July, last October and last December, click here or visit the Magazine section.

A special Christmas present for both our readers

THIS time last Christmas Toyota's tiniest offering got robbed of a not-at-all prestigious award, and it's all my fault.

Regular readers might recall that last year I offered up some honours to the good, the bad and the ugly of 2009, and that Toyota's radical little IQ got pipped to the post by Ford's Fiesta at the very last minute, largely because I wimped out and said the oriental city car's boot was too small.

Yep, it's time to revive the Life On Cars Awards, in a time-honoured tradition dating back to, oooh, this time last year. Only this time the job of working out what this year's best car was is even harder, because there's no less than five motors to mull over.

For starters, there's the Citroen DS3, which not only got shortlisted for the official European Car of the Year award but was also named by Stuff Magazine as the nation's trendiest car. I still think the clutch is a little lighter than I'd like but in every version I've tried is fabulously crisp through the corners, the interior gives off an air of quality and it looks great. It is that rare thing; a Citroen that's cool.

But it's got competition in the surprising shape of the Suzuki Swift, which I wasn't expecting to be anything Earth-shattering but it bowled me over by being a small sports car in disguise. I still think it's not quite as funky as its predecessor and that the boot lip's too high, but everything from its slick gearchange to its sense of fun when you drive it proved hugely impressive.

The car, I reckon, everyone at The Champion offices loved was Skoda's Yeti, which offers much more than just distinctive styling. It's like a Land Rover Discovery, but usefully smaller and much, much cheaper. If you like taking your dog for walks in the countryside, I cannot think of a better car for the job.

Certainly its roomier than the Honda's CR-Z, a sporty and slightly cramped coupe I drove and fell in love with on a couple of occasions this year. It achieves the historic feat of being the first hybrid car you'd actually want to buy because it's a nice car, and not as an eco-friendly statement. Good looking, revvy and fun to drive, it's a real contender.

It's only matched in the style stakes by our final contender, the Peugeot RCZ, which I've already had several arguments with readers over because I reckon it is truly beautiful. Striking, sporty and surprisingly practical, I'm not surprised Peugeot has had such a hit on its hands with this coupe.

It's a special treat for Champion-reading car lovers, and my way of saying Merry Christmas.

Life On Cars Magazine, Issue Two

IT'S BACK, by popular demand!

Lots of you said you enjoyed Life On Cars in handy magazine form when the original issue got published way back in July, as a sort of birthday treat for the blog you're reading reaching its first birthday.

In the end, I decided to do a follow up because there's been so much going on in the motoring world, and with the return of Dune FM's Live From Studio One yet to be announced it could be a while before there's any more radio broadcasts.

But along with some stuff you'll already be familiar with, there's also a couple of pieces you won't have read yet, including a media man's perspective of The Stig identity story which gripped the tabloids not so long ago, and a guide to the LA Auto Show, taking place this week.

Read it, enjoy it, and let me know what you think, and hopefully you'll enjoy reading through it as much as I've enjoyed making it.

Will there be a third? Watch this space...

Coming soon...

THE Life On Cars magazine is back!

Well almost, with the most I can reveal at the moment of the upcoming second issue being this preview of the front cover. I can promise, though that the whole thing will be available to read on here later this week.

If you're not familiar with the original issue, which was published to coincide with the first anniversary of Life On Cars back in July, you can read it again in all its glory by clicking here, or by visiting the Magazine section above.

Meanwhile, the website itself is also going to be treated to its annual facelift later this week, to make sure it stays fresh and easy to use as well as being the region's best source of motoring news, reviews and opinions. I can't say much yet about what form it'll take...but I hope you enjoy the finished product.

Happy Birthday, Life On Cars!

TIME flies when you're having fun.

It's been exactly one year since Life On Cars first went live, with a short, shouty piece about why BMW's attempts to revive the Mini Mayfair name wouldn't work. As it turns out the trademark reliability of the original Mayfair - or the lack of it - has become a bit of a running joke ever since, but at least it gives me something to write about!

The story of my very own Mini Mayfair kicked off Life On Cars on July 28 last year, and since then the blog's grown way beyond the web-based rant I started off to keep my toe in the deep end of the motoring pool after I'd ended my stint as a writer for the motors page for the Daily Post in North Wales.

Alongside the blog there's now the weekly column in The Champion newspaper, the increasingly popular Fire Up The... road test section and a monthly spot on the Live From Studio One show on Dune FM, which is off-air for the moment but will be back in September. All this from a chap with a penchant for clapped-out classic cars which break down a lot.

How best to celebrate? A cake would have been a bit too obvious so I've gone with what several people suggested; create my very own car magazine! Both my readers, I'm sure, will be delighted with the work that's gone into creating Life On Cars Magazine, which you can browse through below.

Read it, enjoy it, and let me know what you think. I might even make another if Life On Cars is here this time next year...
